HELLO, MR. SOUL, I JUST DROPPED BY...

Here's The Buffalo Springfield, featuring Neil Young and Stephen Stills, performing on The Hollywood Palace. This is a great clip of "For What It's Worth" and "Mr. Soul," with a priceless introduction by an old hack. This was beamed out across America when there were only three or four channels on your television. Imagine that.

Stephen Stills went on to join David Crosby, formerly of The Byrds, and Graham Nash, formerly of The Hollies, to form Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Neil Young joined them on their second album. Below, CSNY perform "Down By the River" in 1969.

I think the Best of Buffalo Sprinfield album was one of the best of all time. I actually had it (and others) along with a battery operated turntable in the field in Vietnam. I've always been a big CSNY fan and finnally got to see them for the first time a few years ago when they played the arena in San Jose CA. They were as good as ever and Neil Young, who is a local, was awesome on the organ.

That record was in heavy rotation on my turntable, which wasn't under fire I might add. "Retrospective" I saw CSNY in 1973, and I rode up from Portland to Seattle on a motorcycle, and we didn't have tickets, but stood outside the Seattle Coliseum with our long hair and crash helmets and the police thought we were there for a riot. Maybe it was the helmets. Anyway, they shooed us troublemakers away but we could hear the music from inside the place, so we "left" but actually went around to the other side of the building, and I confess some young usher on a smoke break held a back door open for us and we ran inside, through two sets of doors, and blended into the crowd and saw the last half of CSNY!

Right, David --
This is a very young Neil Young, but his sideburns are very old, positively Martin van Buren!
